Conditions
Yesterday's brisk headwind backed off to a steady but considerably lesser head push, with flat conditions all day. The course appeared to be fair, as well; so long as the headwind comes straight down the course, all racing will be fair. The only possibly unfair scenario is a quartering head from the starboard side, in which Lane 6 will get some help.
"The Real Henley"
The desperately dated Henley riff on the main page of row2k caused one local to taunt "put up something about the REAL Henley." Ah, local pride.
This Henley is much like the Other Henley, without the blazers, ties, and clogged accents. That is, St. Catharines is a perfect venue for hops-driven rowing mania, with its own version of the Angel, a bar right at the finish line packed with revelers pouring into the streets wearing rowing t's and shorts.
Entertainment was provided by a headband-clad guitar player accompanied by a MIDI beatbox doing 70's AOR hits; the guy is almost unquestionably a U.S. expat draft dodger who had a low number. On my run, the karaoke had moved into either the ridiculous or the sublime - the entire patio bar was singing along to John Denver songs.
Canal St. curves behind the finish line, offering an unparalleled view directly down the racecourse, only about 150 meters beyond the line. Local regatta viewers first set up lawn chairs in the grass on the hill above the course, then tonight a metal grandstand appeared, much like those found at Little League fields. Not a bad way to take in a World championships, and the price is right too: free.
Lake Grass a Concern of Coaches
Lake grass growing in parts of he warmup area has caused considerable concern on the part of the coaches and managers, as a clump of grass lodged on a rudder or fin can go undetected, save for in the disastrous effects it can have on boat speed. Officials are working on a solution to the problem.
Row2k Updates
A somewhat spartan media setup has make it a little more difficult than usual for me to update row2k; I'm working on workarounds; you folks know me well enough to know I'll pull it off.
Gossip
Remember, we're on FISA rules here. But nonetheless, some US team birthdays are worth noting. The following have celebrated birthdays here in St. Kitts:
Sean Hall
Mike Altman
Willie Black
Mark Sniderman
That's it for tonight, catch you tomorrow from the course.
